Welcome to English 1113 Section 03, Spring 2007
Tuesday, 16 January 2007
Welcome
Mood:  quizzical

hello, everyone!  welcome to the spring semester and to english 1113 section 001 of freshman english at oklahoma panhandle state university.

the main objective of this class is for students to practice and improve their writing skills, and to do that, we'll engage ourselves in different kinds of writing activities--just like this class blog.

each day, there will be one student responsible for blogging what occurred in class.  the blog will then be available to all students so they can read what we did in class and what was assigned for the following time we meet.

blogs  are not required to be very lengthy, but each entry must include the following:

a) a detailed summary of what was covered in class that day;

b) a detailed summary of what is assigned for the following time we meet (that is, page number of assignments, etc.);

c) the blogger's name and last name.

blog entries need to be recorded on the day when they are due.  that is, if you are to blog what occurred in class on january 1, your blog entry should be posted sometime during that day--not on january 2 or 3.  by then, it would be too late.

enjoy your blogging experience!

i hope you all have a WONDERFUL semester.

 Today in class we took notes on Thesis statements. We went over ways you can develope your thesis statement. We copied down a diagram of what an essay should look like, and what needs to be included to make it good. Near the end of the class period, we talked a little bit about our first paper. It will be an evaluative essay. The homework that was assigned to us was :

Read pg's 253-257 in your Reading Critically bookDo reading for meaning exercise on page 257, and have it would be better typed. Due on Thursday Feb. 1.

Today Febuary 6th, Tito talked about evaluating an essay. We revised  Working at Mcdonald's which was given to us as assignment. He went further to explain steps involved in evaluating an essay.

We also did grammer on sentence Fragment from the Practical English Handbook (pg110-112).

We are to read page 301-307 and 268- 270 from the Reading Critically Writing Well text book for next class.

Name: "Jason Treat"

On February 8th we discussed verbs.  In class, we completed excersise 7 and 8, pages 120-122, in the little handbook.  We turned them in at the end of class.  Do not use the verbs (being, to be, be, am, is, are, was, were, been) when writing your essays, they are weak verbs.  We need to come up with better verbs.  For homework, we are to read Poltergeist: It Knows What Scares You, pages 285-288, then complete the excercise on page 288.  It should be 12 point font and double spaced with your name and class title.

Tuesday, 13 February 2007 - 11:30 AM CST

Name: "Megan Lehr"

February 13th we discussed our evaluative essays and our rough draft is due on Thursday the 15th. We went on to discuss diction. There are four types of word choice: 1.Wordiness. Writing that uses more words than necessary, 2. Slang. Expressions of everyday language that are lively and fun, but highly informal. It is not understanable to all readers as it may change from region to region, 3. Cliches. A common place, boring expression. At some point, cliches might have been smart expressions, but their overuse turns them into dull expressions, 4. Inflated words. Overly fancy words that may confuse(or unintentionally amuse) the reader.

We did a work sheet in class where we had partners and had to go in and fix and label the mistakes. Have your rough draft ready for Thursday.

Thursday, 22 February 2007 - 8:49 PM CST

Name: "Megan McMurphy"

 Today in class we looked over our essays and counted how may be verbs we had in them.  Then we counted how many times we used the words you, your, and you're.  Then we split into groups of three to four people and read our papers aloud, and wrote a paragraph over what the other students in your group said about your essay.

Friday, 2 March 2007 - 1:58 PM CST

Name: "Jesus Hita"

 Today in class observational and descriptive essays were discussed and the proper method of each essay and the purpose and/or sentiment each one was to convey to it's reader or audience. We also did some work in class Exercises 13 and 14 pages 139-40 which dealt with the topic of Subject and Verb: Agreement. We were also recommended to ponder the group(made of three people) you wish to join or start by discussing it with your classmates and if whoever can not decide he/she  will be assigned to a group.

 A grammar test will be conducted next Tuesday the 8th which encapsulate all the material from Paragraphs to the latest topic, Subject and Verb: Agreement. I recommend everyone to read/review pages 60-139 in your Practical English Handbook and review your notes on writing a proper Essay and what it is cromprised of and the purposes of the essay constituents(thesis,introduction,body, and conclusion). Read, "Last Stop" page 108 for Tuesday 3,6 and do Reading for Meaning , one page at least and double spaced and use a 12 point font, this assignment is in your Reading Well textbook. Read Section 12(143-50) and 13(151-56) by Thursday 3,8.
